Problems with the litter box

“Dear Cocoa,

I have been having a bit of trouble with getting my litter box cleaned by my pets.  They let it go for sooooo long that I can’t stand the smell, much less walking in it to do my thing.  What can I do to get my pet to clean it more often?

“Dear Dirty Litter Box,

I have found that the best way to get my pets to understand that my box is too dirty for me to use is to leave them presents as a hint.  Try using the sheets on their bed, or go in the middle of the living room when they aren’t looking.  It may take a few times, so be patient.  Once the box is clean, be sure to use it consistently until it is bad again and then leave more presents.  They will get the hint and clean it more often, I promise.  However, I do warn you that they may take exception to the presents, so you might want to pick a nice quiet spot where they won’t find you to hide in after you leave the presents.  Unless your pets are extremely naive about cats, they will get the hint soon enough and your problems will be over.  Let me know how it goes.
